To fit with the design/ aim and purpose of the Surefire torch most are powered by lithium CR123A batteries. The reason being for this is that the CR123A battery is compact in size, very low in weight and gives out a very high power output. It is the ideal power source for the Surefire torch. There are a few examples of Surefire flashlights that come with rechargeable battery packs. The primary material used in the production of the Surefire torch is that of anodized aluminium in several different colour formats. Their Nitrolon models are made of glass reinforced nylon.
All of Surefire’s flashlights are weatherproof and come with various accessories if required. These accessories include red/ blue/ infrared filters, beam diffusers, beam covers, pouches/ holsters and spare battery/ bulb carriers.
A torch or flashlight is basically a portable instrument that gives out light from a bulb or an LED. The basic torch design is that of a light source in a parabolic reflector which shapes the torches beam. The light source is protected with a transparent window from damage and outside aliens and there is a power supply which is usually a battery in some shape or form. All of this is wrapped in a casing that is made and designed to fit well in the user’s hand. As well as hand held torches there are also torches that can be mounted on to helmets such as those torches used by miners and campers. A slight adaptation to the surefire torch is that of the battery lamp that is used by cyclists on their bikes at night time. In the United States and Canada the name flashlight is used for this handy tool whilst in most other English speaking countries the term used is torch.
Battery powered LED Surefire torch
The surefire torch the L4 Lumamax is compact and pocket sized. This high intensity LED flashlight is ideal for just general use and has also self defence capabilities with its light actually bright enough to temporarily blind and disorientate a person by impairing his night adapted vision. The light emitting diode produces a smooth, brilliant and pre focused beam totalling nearly five times more light than that of a big two D cell flashlight. The light emitting diode is also almost indestructible. This is most definitely one of SureFire’s LED pocket powerhouses. Being small with high output makes the L4 Lumamax ideal for everyday use.
Weighing just 3.4 ounces and measuring 5.1 inches in length this surefire torch can easily be kept in your pocket for safe storage and easy accessibility. With a maximum of two hours run time on the maximum output of 120 lumens this flashlight can take care of most uses from camping at night time to dealing will a fuse failure at night in the home. It is powered by two 123A lithium batteries and yet again is another excellent example of a surefire torch.

Surefire torch Kroma Flashlight
Surefire torch Kroma due to being compact and pocket sized with high intensity the SureFire Kroma is ideal for tactical, self defence, recreational and general use. It has a selectable output so can be used in all types of situations and levels of darkness. The primary light emitting diode gives two white light output levels and is virtually indestructible. This Kroma has a long running low beam and also a brilliant tactical level high beam which is about three times brighter than that of the light from a larger two D cell torch. Now that much light can temporarily blind someone so this torch is a very good application for self defence. The TIR ( total internal reflection ) in the Kroma makes sure that the primary beam is focused perfectly with no holes, hot spots or shadows. The Kroma also comes with blue and red secondary LEDs with two output levels allowing the user to operate in minimal light for such things as tracking, map reading or performing other close up work. The red LED is my particular favourite as you can negotiate outside without disturbing wildlife as the majority of animals can not see red light.
The Kroma is a tough cookie. Built to last with a rugged aerospace grade aluminium body that has been hard anodized in black. The LED light actually has no filament that can actually burn out or break meaning that this LED will actually last for thousands of hours.
The light is also O ring sealed making it weather proof and keeping dust and the elements out. It has a rotating selector ring which means you can control the torch without even looking. The window is of tempered pyrex, Coming with the Kroma is a heavy duty pocket clip, easy to use tail cap switch and very importantly a switch lockout that prevents any false activation. The Kroma comes with a lifetime guarantee. That just about says it all about this make. Apart from losing the flashlight, once purchased you will always have the Kroma for life.

The first hand held torch was invented around the year 1899. In 1896 saw the invention of the first dry cell battery- Instead of using a liquid this battery used a paste electrode. Because of this the battery did not spill or break easily so was much more suitable in the use of portable electrical devices. So in 1899 American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company obtained the patent from English inventor David Misell and this Misell device was powered by D batteries and hence the invention of the hand held torch. Many advances have since been made in the development of the surefire torch and other hand held torches to get us to where we are today. There are many torches or flashlights out there in the market place today but out of them all we prefer the surefire torch.

Lithium batteries for Flashlights
Surefire torch lithium batteries are disposable batteries that use lithium metal or lithium compounds as an anode. They are more powerful than standard alkaline or zinc carbon batteries and depending upon the design and chemical compounds used, the lithium cell can produce voltages ranging from 1.5 V to 3.7 V. These types of batteries are ideal for the portable consumer electronic devices.
Most of Surefire torch flashlights are run on 123A lithium batteries. There are many more advantages to using the 123A lithium battery instead of the standard alkaline battery. The 123A produces nearly twice as much power output as the standard alkaline battery and yet it only weighs about half that of the alkaline battery. In use the lithium battery has better voltage maintenance.
For most of its life the lithium battery maintains a fairly constant voltage output of 95%, depending on the discharge rate. The thing with the alkaline battery is that its voltage drops significantly and rapidly during moderate to high discharge rates. This does actually make them unsuitable for the use in high power flashlights. Another attribute of the lithium battery is that it has a longer shelf life. Even after ten years of storage it can retain as much as 90% of its original power output capability. This is not the case with alkaline batteries which deplete themselves much more rapidly. And finally lithium batteries perform so much better over a greater span of differing temperatures.
LEDs for Flashlights
Surefire torch use a light emitting diode that is an electronic light source. Oleg Vladimirovich who was a radio technician, built the first LED in the 1920s. It was he who noticed that diodes used in radio receivers emitted light when an electrical current was passed through them. In 1962 the LED was introduced as a practical electronic component. All early devices using the LEDs emitted low intensity red light, but nowadays the modern LEDs are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infra red wavelengths with very high brightness.

LEDs are based on the semiconductor diode. When the diode is switched on, this releases electrons which are able to recombine with holes and thus energy is released in the form of light. Electroluminescence is the name of this effect and the energy gap of the semiconductor determines the colour of light that is produced. The LED is most times very small in area with integrated optical components to shape its radiation pattern and help with assisting in the reflection.
Compared to traditional light sources the LEDs offer many more advantages. The LEDs conserve energy, have a much longer lifetime, smaller in size, greatly improved robustness and have faster switching, But on the other hand they are actually relatively expensive and do require a more precise current and heat management than that of traditional light sources.
LEDs can nowadays be found almost anywhere. They are used as low energy indicators and have replaced traditional light sources in the likes of general lighting and automotive lighting.. Because of their compact size this has allowed developments in new text and video displays and sensors. And because of their high switching rates they have become a necessity in the development of communication technology.
