The Hilleberg Soulo is a tent that is quite complex in design. It has been extremely well thought out and there are a combination of design aspects which make this tent as good as it is. It has taken the vestibule design from the Akto, has the free standing capability of the Unna and has the strength of the Jannu. It is like having 3 tents in one. So the Soulo has a spacey vestibule, is free standing and is extremely tough. Pretty much all you want from a solo tent.
The Soulo can be used in all weather conditions whether you be protected or exposed and has a compact free standing footprint. So if you need to pitch it on rocky ground or sharp edges you have nothing to worry about. Though not the lightest of the Hilleberg tent range, the Soulo is still light enough to be carried on long journeys, but is much preferred as a base camp tent.
Because the Soulo is of dome design it has a great snow load handling ability and the free standing construction means that you can pitch it literally anywhere. In fact there are not many outdoor activities where the Soulo does not provide a suitable shelter. When tested during it's development, professionals, mountaineers and recreational campers all gave it the thumbs up. Many tents are not suitable and not designed to accommodate tall people. The Soulo provides an excellent shelter option for those of you above average height.

The Soulo is heavier than the Akto with a packed weight of 2.1 kg and uses 12 V pegs if required. Inside the space is 2 metre cubic and the tent can be purchased in either red or green.
Out of the two, the Akto and Soulo, the Soulo is the preferred choice this end. There is not a lot between the two on quality and use, but it is the dome design which sways it. As good as the tunnel tent design is, I have always favoured the dome design. I find them better and more able to deal with snowy conditions and less inhibiting in the interior. The Soulo is also free standing.
In our opinion, Hilleberg have really excelled with their solo tents and they should be at least in the top three list of your tents to look at when out and about to buy a new tent. It is a shame that Hilleberg do not run a promotion of buy one get one free! It would be nice to have both the Akto and Soulo in the camping and outdoor equipment.
The Hilleberg Soulo is an expedition ready and free standing solo tent which is ultralight, strong and durable. A good buy by any standards.

Attributes Of The Hilleberg Soulo
The Hilleberg Soulo dome design is completely free standing.
It has a self supporting structure and the vestibule is also included in this self supporting structure.
It is a very easy and quick tent to set up due to the short pole sleeves and the clip system it employs. There is a very compact footprint yet the tent remains very roomy on the inside.
The Hilleberg Soulo uses very lightweight materials in it's construction. The outer tent fabric is Kerlon 1200 and the tent poles are 9 mm poles. The poles are combined with the 3 poles crossing each other in 3 separate places. This gives the Soulo it's stability and ability to handle snow load if required.
When you pitch the Soulo you require no pegs to do so. However there are 12 peg points if you wish to use them and increase stability, particularly in high wind scenarios.
The 3 pole structure and dome shape allow the tent to have spacious floor and head room.
For convenience of use, the vestibule and entrance are combined. You will notice that the vestibule is parallel to the sleeping are as well. So when you need to access your gear it is very easy and convenient to do so. You can even do it when you are lying in your sleeping bag.
The Soulo has a very good ventilation system as well. This system works in all weather conditions because the tent fabric is breathable. Adjustable vents also help with the system. The vent above the door is air permeable yet water and snow resistant.
