Bo Hilleberg formed Hilleberg in 1971 as a forestry equipment company. When he met his wife he moved to Stockholm and that was where Hilleberg the tent maker blossomed. Bo was an avid outdoor person and loved his camping but had a problem with the tents available to him. It frustrated him that one had to pitch an inner tent first and then cover it with a flysheet. He wanted a tent that could be pitched with the inner and outer tent together. So Bo designed tents while his wife stitched them and that was the beginning of a long successful venture.

To this day there is still a Hilleberg principle which the company follows without compromise when it designs and manufactures it’s tents. When you are out camping in the wilderness shelter is a basic need. What Hilleberg means by basic is to be able to shelter from weather conditions whilst having a tent that is also easy to carry with you. Hilleberg tents are designed and manufactured with the principles of reliability, ease of use, versatility, durability, comfort and low weight.

Not bad criteria for a tent in our opinion. Pretty much everything you could ask for. Hilleberg themselves believe that their tents are the best in the world. But which manufacturer will not say this about their own product. However if you ask outdoor types about Hilleberg, the recommendations just keep flowing. Some go as far to say that after having a Hilleberg tent, no other type and brand of tent is an option for them.

If you are looking to buy a new tent then the range of Hilleberg tents must be on your list of tents to look at. They manufacture both tunnel and dome tents all with excellent features and properties, making specific models for all types of conditions. The Keron is perhaps the best well known Hilleberg tent and the company itself thinks of it as their flagship tent. I myself bought a Keron in 1988 and to this day I still use it for certain trips. It doesn’t look in spectacular fashion these days, and which tent would after 20 years, but it still functions superbly and provides me with all the shelter I require.

The Hilleberg tent has been designed and manufactured to have several qualities all combined resulting in a complete all round tent. It is these qualities that define Hilleberg tents. Instead of concentrating on one particular quality, at the cost of other qualities, a more all round and superior tent is created.

Reliability

When you buy a tent you want one to be reliable. That is number more priority in our opinion. The last thing you want is a tent that will let you down in the wilderness. Hilleberg use a Kerlon fabric with their tents. Kerlon is extremely tough and will pass the test of time. When you look at the design of a Hilleberg tent you will see that it is aerodynamic which means that all the wind’s forces are evenly distributed. For stability the guys lines are all strategically placed for optimum performance.

A tent with a good outer material, aerodynamic design and high performing guy lines will prove itself to be extremely reliable in all conditions. Just what you want in an unpredictable wilderness. Add ventilation, low weight and durability to the equation and there is not much more one requires with a tent. A tent with a balance of all these features combined, such as the Hilleberg tents range, will prove itself to be reliable for many years to come.

Ease Of Use

The thing with a tent is that it can be reliable, robust, durable and all the other qualities you require. But if it is difficult to pitch then it simply is not good enough. There will be times when you have to pitch your tent in bad weather. If the tent is hard to pitch in good weather just imagine the problems you are going to have with it in bad weather.

Hilleberg tents are actually simply designed so that even if you are on your own they are simple and quick to pitch no matter the weather conditions. To make pitching simple, Hilleberg tents employ linked inner and outer tents, continuous pole sleeves, colour coding and adjustable pegs.

Versatility Of The Tent

Economically and for versatility reasons it is good to have a tent that can perform in all environments and conditions. When you go camping you are never sure of the conditions that you are going to encounter. Hilleberg tents allow for this and their tents can all individually cope with an array of conditions equally well.

Durability Of The Tent

When you buy a tent you want it to last. Well that is pretty much the scenario you want with anything you purchase. However the tent is subject to a lot of wear and tear from the great outdoors. A tent that is not durable is a waste of money. Hilleberg tents are all constructed using the highest quality materials. This makes their tents cost more than many other models but the old adage you only get what you pay for, comes in to the equation here.

Comfort Of The Tent

When camping the tent is your home from home and you want it to be comfortable. This means you require good living space, good storage space and plenty of ventilation options inside the tent. Hilleberg tents offer comfort equal and greater to many other tents out there on the market today.

Materials Used With Hilleberg Tents

Basically the materials in which a tent are constructed from are the only barriers between you and the weather elements. This means that you want the toughest and best materials you can get with a tent. All materials used with Hilleberg tents are tested in labs and only used if they come up to standard. Kerlon is the favourite of Hilleberg. It is very strong, lightweight and waterproof. This makes it an ideal material to use for any outer material of a tent.

The outer material of a tent is meant to keep the elements out. The inner materials are just as important for the comfort of the tent even though they are required to operate differently. Inner tent fabrics need to lightweight and breathable. They have to be able to allow vapour to leave the tent whilst at the same time preventing water from entering the tent.

Floor materials are essential to any tent’s performance. They need to be tough to stand the vigor of wear and tear and at the same time be waterproof to protect the inside of the tent. It is imperative that the tent floor material be puncture and abrasion proof whilst staying flexible even in the harshest of conditions.

Hilleberg Tent Poles

To match high quality materials, the skeleton of the tent needs to be supportive and sturdy. Only high quality tent poles will suffice. Hilleberg use DAC tent poles and on certain tents use the DAC Featherlite poles.

Each set of tent poles for each specific model of tent have been calculated properly so that the best size available for each specific tent is provided. The most popular size of Hilleberg tent poles are 9 mm and 10 mm. Poles that need bending are pre bent and for those poles which need to be connected, have colour coding.

Ventilation In Hilleberg Tents

Designing a suitable and efficient tent ventilation system is actually a very hard task to do. The tent needs to keep the weather out yet allow enough in to deal with any condensation and keep you and your camping and outdoor equipment damp free. If an outer tent does not go all the way to the ground it will let in water and any misplaced mesh panel can have dire results in letting in the rain and snow. These considerations have to be taken on board as well as having the need to remove moisture from the inside of the tent. Not an easy task to do. No tent is condensation free. There is simply no way of making a tent completely immune to condensation.

With Hilleberg tents the ventilation system will work in all weather conditions. In each tent a main vent is placed high up to give a chimney effect. This vent will move warm air upwards and out of the tent. All main vents in a Hilleberg tent can be adjusted to have more or less venting options depending upon what you require. As well as the necessary vents, the doors on the inner tent have mesh panels to provide venting and weather protection. Each mesh panel has an adjustable fabric covering.

The double wall on Hilleberg tents is a vital part of the ventilation system in the tent. The outer wall keeps the weather out and the inner wall lets moisture vapour escape to the gap between the two walls. Once between these two walls the moisture will cool and turn to water droplets. These droplets are prevented from entering the tent again due to the waterproof fabric of the tent.
