The Racerback Bra
The racerback bra is a bra that has been specially designed and deviates away from the conventional bra design. What makes the racerback bra different from a conventional bra is that it’s two straps will either cross themselves or meet in a T or V shape across your back. The straps will then emerge from the centre of the bra on your back and then continue to run over your shoulders in a V shape to connect up with the cups at the front.
Because of it’s design the racerback bra is very versatile and can be worn for day to day wear, with evening wear and perhaps it’s most popular use, when doing exercise, camping and outdoor activities For general wear these bras can be worn with sleeveless tops and dresses because unlike their conventional counterparts, the racerback bra will not have it’s straps showing on your shoulders. Why Have A Racerback Bra?

many times have you worn a conventional bra only for a strap to pop out of your outfit and show? And how many times has a conventional bra strap slipped of your shoulder? None of these problems become an issue when you are wearing a racerback bra.
As well as being a discreet bra, the racerback bra also has other qualities and advantages. Because of the design it allows you a lot more liberal movement of your arms. The straps are designed not to slip off your shoulders during any physical activity and the whole bra will give you better breast support and enhance your posture because your shoulders are pulled back slightly by the design. But it is the freedom and support that the racerback bra gives you that has brought the design to the forefront of sports bras with many leading sports clothing manufacturers designing and making them.
Many women appreciate wearing the racerback bra because it simply takes off any unnecessary pressure from the outer shoulder area. If you are a frequent wearer of the conventional bra then you will be familiar with this pressure which at times can be very uncomfortable. You will have also experienced the red marks left behind by the bra straps. And we all know how annoying it is to have a bra strap that keeps on slipping off the shoulder when we least want it to. The racerback bra does not have any of these issues and offers the wearer the inner piece of mind and gives confidence.
If you have fuller sized breasts then the racerback bra has to be a consideration for you. Because of the design, your breasts are pulled up to the middle of your chest. This is much more comfortable and also enhances your look. You will be able to wear tank tops and other such similar garments without having to worry about or be conscious of breast-sag which can look a little awkward under such garments.
The sports bra such as the racerback bra is a bra that is worn by women to give them additional support to their breast during any form of physical exercise. These bras are much more sturdier than conventional bras and minimize any breast movement resulting in less discomfort and reducing any potential damage to the wearer’s chest ligaments.
The sports racerback bra is very popular among women with larger sized breasts because it reduces pain and discomfort. And other reason that is definitely worth mentioning is that these bras minimize breast movement and actually prevent any potential embarrassment due to breast movement. In fact without them there are many women who would not even participate in their chosen physical activities due to the embarrassment factor. So they are a great product that gives a lot of women their much needed freedom.
Discomfort In Exercise
At least 50 % of women suffer from breast discomfort or pain whilst during exercise. The intensity obviously differs from individual to individual and can also be dependant upon the clothing that is worn. There was a test in Australia carried out with 3 women where they exercised bare breasted, with a conventional bra and a sports bra. The results were of course that a bra reduced breast movement but the sports bra was the most effective.
In 2007 a test was carried out and it was found that breasts move in 3 planes of motion during any exercise. And because of this encapsulation versions of bras were found to be more effective than compression bras in the reduction of breast movement. The encapsulation bra reduces motion in 2 planes of movement while the compression bra does so in only 1 plane. One concern of the sports bra among professional sports women was that it would inhibit breathing because of increased pressure on the rib cage of the wearer. But it tests done there was no significant effect on the breathing when a sports bra was worn.
Choosing A Racerback Bra For Camping And Outdoor Activities
If you are planning to join a gym and start working out on a regular basis or just participating in sports when you feel like it, then you will require a specially designed bra for support and comfort. The bra that you should be looking at is the racerback bra. This bra will give you all the support, shaping and compression that you will require especially when you are out camping and pursuing outdoor activities. But for comfort, it can not be stressed enough how important it is for the racerback bra to fit you properly. When searching for one you need to consider the band, the straps and the cups carefully and below we shall give you a couple of pointers to help you on your selection process.
The band is the first thing we shall look at. On the racerback bra you want this band to fit a little more snugly than on your normal conventional bra. A good way to test this is to put the bra on and see if it feels snug. You then want to take in a deep breath with the snap fastened. If you are able to do this without restriction and discomfort it is a good sign. As well as the breathing test you want to move around to make sure the band does not ride up your back or even fold over at the sides. If the band rides up or folds over you can adjust the straps to see if that helps. If not then you should be looking at a different size. The band can be made from a variety of materials but those that have kycra or spandex woven in to them will give you the best comfort and compression. So check the label to see what the materials are.
The straps are a very important integral part of the racerback bra. You must have straps with the racerback design because they will pull inwards across your chest pushing your breasts together and providing the necessary support they require. These straps also need to cross over on your back and settle very close to your neck line so that they do not slip off your shoulders during activity. But do make sure that there is some movement in the straps because straps that are too tight will just cause you pain and discomfort. This is particularly so if the straps are not wide enough because they will just simply cut in to your shoulders. And finally whenever possible, always opt for adjustable straps so you can custom fit your racerback bra.
The cups of the bra must be inspected carefully. What you require here is for each breast to be self contained in it’s respective cup. This means that the fit is correct. Breasts are usually different in sizes so aim to get the perfect fit on your larger breast and not the smaller one. To make sure you have the perfect fit, your breasts should not fall out of the cups. If they do then the bra is too small. If you notice that the cups have wrinkles then you know they are too small. When exercising rubbing and chaffing can become a problem if the cups are not of a suitable material. So look for a polyester/lycra mix as these are recommended for most comfort.
Finally pay attention to the material the whole bra is made out of. The development of materials over the last 30 years or so for sports clothing has improved dramatically resulting in super comfort sports clothing. Materials can now even work to wick away any sweat and moisture from your body whilst allowing the body to breathe too. Along with all these attributes a good material will be flexible and allow you to move properly. One material to avoid is that of 100 % cotton. With this you will get hot very quickly, suffer from rubbing and be extremely uncomfortable as it retains moisture at a very thirsty rate. By choosing correctly you will have an excellent bra to add to your camping and outdoor equipment.
The racerback bra may not be to everyone’s taste. Many women swear by them and say they would not even consider wearing another form of bra. But there are those who have tried them out and were not particularly happy or impressed. On the plus side these bras gives extra freedom of movement and extra support. But there have been those who are critical of the close set straps that can rub and irritate the side of the neck. We have even heard of some women complaining that the extra support that the racerback bra gives actually translates to extra weight pulling down on their shoulders. But we here are very supportive of the racerback bra and do actually wonder if the complaints are due to an ill fitting bra or even a wrong size. A wrong sized racerback bra will definitely rub your back and shoulder blades causing discomfort and soreness. But doesn’t wearing shoes for example of the wrong size cause pain to the feet? Yes of course they do, but you don’t write of all shoes do you. So when it comes to selecting a bra you should try on several different sizes and styles in shops to get the right fit which is comfortable and suitable. You need to pay particular attention to the support they give, and how they feel on any particular possible chaffing areas such as the back of the neck or back Once you have done that it is then possible for you to simply shop from the comfort of your own home via the internet.

Improving Posture With A Racerback Bra
Because of the way that society is today poor posture is rife. Poor posture is caused when certain muscles tighten up or shorten while other muscles lengthen and become weak during a normal day’s activities, particularly at work. People who sit down all day in front of a computer are particularly vulnerable to poor posture due to their sitting position. High stress jobs also play a part in poor posture and any stress or strain from work can result in neck and shoulder problems. Studies have shown that a poor posture sitting position will result in neck pain syndromes and postural backache.
Poor posture can be defined in a couple of ways. One such way is with rounded and elevated shoulders with the head pushed out in a forward position such as when looking at a computer screen. The results here are stress on the spine at the top of the neck and on the shoulders. Another form of poor posture is the forward tilting of the hips. This causes an increase in the curve of the lumber spine as well as a protruding stomach.
One way to help with combating poor posture is to wear a racerback bra, especially if you find yourself sitting at a desk for many hours at a time. The bra will help you by pulling back your shoulders and keeping the spine straighter. The design of the racerback bra is intended to relieve a lot of the pressure from your shoulders and upper back by giving more support. So to help with your posture you should pop down to your local lingerie shop and get yourself fully measured up properly. Select the types of racerback bras you prefer and choose the design that suits you best.
Try on the bras and see how they feel for support. Have the shop worker check over the straps and cups to ensure that you have enough coverage. You don’t want the straps too loose or too tight and then ask if the bra is the most suitable for your posture requirements.
Once you have gone through all of this and found a suitable bra you should buy at least a couple. Choose different colours if you so desire to match different clothing. White and black bras are always versatile and suit practically any wardrobe.
Try to get in the habit of wearing the racerback bra at work every day to help with pulling your shoulders back while you are sitting at a desk. But do help your racerback bra by always remembering to pull your shoulders back and straighten your spine whenever you can. These actions may not prevent all poor posture but they will certainly help.
Make Your Own Racerback Bra
If you so wish it is a fairly simple task to make your own racerback bra to add to your camping and outdoor equipment. You can take one of your existing conventional bras and convert it in just a couple of minutes with a little bit of sewing. If your conventional bra is not pulling your shoulders back, preventing your breasts from bouncing around and distributing the weight of your breasts properly , then perhaps you should convert it.
Here is how to.
For a temporary racerback bra just cut a piece of elastic to approximately 4 inches long. Put your existing bra on and then have a friend slide the elastic underneath the straps just below your shoulder blades. Then with the elastic draw the straps together and tie a bow or knot. Hey presto there is a temporary racerback bra for you.
If temporary is not your thing and you want a permanent one the first try your bra on. Ask your friend to mark the spot on the bra strap just below your shoulder blade. Using chalk or something similar is ideal here and you need to mark both straps ensuring that they are even. If they are not even you will not get an end result of a perfect fit.
Once marked take the bra off and put the straps side by side. You need to pin them just above the marks your friend made and about 2 inches below the marks. Next your sewing skills come in to operation and you must sew the straps together almost right down to the bottom mark. You now have a seam and in order to strengthen this seam you need to sew over the seam going in the opposite direction. You will then have yourself a newly converted and super strong permanent racerback bra for you to wear whenever you so desire.
