Shower tents are tents that you use with camping showers in order to give you privacy when showering. When looking to buy a shower tent you should be focusing on one that has a height of 90 inches and a 5.5 or 4.5 foot base which will allow you the space to move around in and get undressed without any restriction. There are many versions of the shower tent to choose from and some do not even have a roof whilst others can enclose you completely just like an old fashioned telephone box.

When you go to buy a shower tent you can either buy one especially suitable for camping showers or one that has dual usage such as the toilet/shower tent. Its entirely up to you which type you buy and you must take the one that is most suitable to you. Before buying check the tent for defects and see if it has the appropriate accessories such as a towel bar, shelves and a gear loft. And make sure that the tent will be sturdy enough to stand up to strong winds. Always opt for a shower tent that has a good quality door zipper that will not jam or break and preferably go for one with metal stakes as the plastic stakes have a habit of breaking after 2 or 3 uses. But as with buying most things for your camping and outdoor equipment pay attention to quality, practicality and durability and then you will have yourself an ideal shower tent to use along with your camping showers.

Make Your Own Camping Bathroom

Many people do not go on camping trips purely because of personal hygiene. Camping is a healthy and fun filled pastime that has so much to all. But when you are in the wilderness or pitched on some campsite you will definitely get dirty and sweaty during the day and just the thought of going to bed in this condition is enough for some people to say “no way“ to camping. Camping on a campsite should offer better options for hygiene compared to being in the wilderness, with toilet and showering facilities but to be honest many campsites have poor facilities if they actually have any at all. In the wilderness the lack of cleaning facilities is understandable, but there is no real excuse for campsites not to have sufficient cleaning facilities, but that’s  just the way it is.

The way around this dilemma of personal hygiene is with just 3 purchases of certain camping and outdoor equipment items it is possible to have your very own personal camping bathroom. The progress and development by camping equipment manufacturers with their products has been rapid in the last 20 years or so and now on the market are the portable camping toilet, camping showers and toilet / shower tents. If you combine all three of these products you have your own bathroom next to your main tent.

The camping toilet can either be a simple version where the waste is collected in a waste suitable bag, or an advanced version that stores the waste and be flushed. Something like the Kampa Porta Flush camping toilet is a very popular among campers. It is well constructed and actually strong enough for an someone to stand on it. It has a 10 litre waste capacity and a 12 litre fresh water tent, so this camping toilet can be used 50 times before it needs to be emptied..

Camping showers also have advanced and the days of standing underneath a perforated tin can in order to shower yourself are long gone. There are solar warmed showers and propane gas showers as well on the market for you to look at. Solar showers obviously rely on the sun as a heat source for warm water, but if you have propane gas shower you are guaranteed hot water whenever and wherever you require it. Something like the Eccotemp L5 for example can give you 28 hours of use off just 1 propane tank. And that is not all that is good about this version of the camping shower. Such is the power of the unit it gives out 1.4 gallons of water every minute with a heat range of 80 to 150 degrees.

So with just these two bathroom appliances of camping toilet and camping shower your personal hygiene concerns are removed and the only thing left to consider is privacy when using these appliances. But it’s easy to solve the privacy issue  with the dual use shower and toilet tent. These tents are basically just smaller versions of your main camping tent. So when buying one of these just apply the same criteria you used to buy your main camping tent and you will end up with a good quality privacy shield that should last you for many years.

So add to your camping and outdoor equipment one of the many camping showers available, a camping toilet and a toilet/shower tent. Combine the three and then you have your very own private camping bathroom with everything you need inside it when you go camping.

Camping Shower Brands

If you are planning on adding a camping shower to your camping and outdoor equipment items then, as nowadays with most pieces of camping equipment, camping showers come in many shapes, sizes and varieties supplied by different manufacturers. Long gone are the days of camping showers being an old perforated tin can hung from a tree with you user standing underneath until the water finished. Camping showers today are both portable and efficient giving hot water in a matter of seconds.

When contemplating whether to buy a camping shower from the wide range that is available there are a couple of factors you must consider. You want the camping shower to be fairly portable and give out a good output of power when supplying you with the water. You also want it to be durable and of course well within your financial budget. There is of course as well the type of camping situation you will be in and this will play a large part in your deciding factor.

If you will be hiking then you definitely do not want to have a camping shower that is bulky and heavy. So in this case you would not even look at propane tank driven showers despite their excellent performance levels. More suitable to hiking would be the solar version camping shower. They are very light to carry, extremely easy to use and will not take up much space in your backpack as they can be packed up into a small tidy package. As effective as they are though, the major drawback with solar camping showers are the fact that they are reliant on the sun as a heat source to warm the water. So if the day is dull and cloudy and the sun does not show it’s face then you will not have hot water.

If you are car camping then your options are greater. You are in a position to carry more weight and bulkier items and the probability is that you are accompanied by friends or family. So you will be looking for a more powerful camping shower especially if you have kids with you. The propane camping showers have battery operated pumps that will give you superb water pressure and can heat water up in seconds. With one of these you will have a never ending supply of warm water that is ideal for the whole family to use when camping.

Examples Of Camping Showers

The 4 gallon storage tank holds enough water for a 10 minute shower and the unit can heat over gallons of hot water before you have to change the batteries and propane cartridge. The batteries are contained in a waterproof case that has an on and off switch. The water pump is a powerful 6 volt unit that gives you great pressure. The flexible shower hose is 8 feet in length and gives you great scope with it’s water saving shower head attached. The whole unit is about half the size of a hiking boot and is very easy to transport. It is powered by propane.

The Texsport Deluxe Camp Shower - Shelter Combo is a camping shower with it’s own tent. It is a very good combination with the tent being specifically made to support the shower. Inside the tent there are quite a few options such as two towel racks, mesh bag for soaps and shampoos, a floor which is detachable and very easy to clean and also a water proof cover.

The camping shower part of this combination is a solar 5 gallon shower bag that you can easily hang from the roof of the tent. There a few shower tents out there on the market that are not sturdy enough to deal with a 5 gallon bag of water and can actually topple over under the weight. Provided that you pitch this unit on flat ground you will have no problems with this tent falling over. It is more than capable and can as well deal with the added weight of towels and toiletries on it’s rails and in the mesh bag.The drawback to this unit though is that it is not particularly portable and you do need to transport it by vehicle rather than hand or backpack.

Camping showers are growing in popularity amongst campers camping and outdoor equipment because they have developed so much over the last decade or so.

As said earlier there is a vast array of them out there on the market now, so think what you require and then choose accordingly. Your camping trip will be so much more enjoyable knowing that you can take a shower whenever you need to. Along with your camping showers you can also take a portable camping toilet with you and keep them both inside a camping toilet/shower tent next to your main tent and then you more or less have a complete bathroom at your disposal. That would be perfect if you are camping with the whole family and the bathroom facilities at the camp site you are pitched at are inadequate or even non existent

To describe a solar shower simply is to just say that it is a plastic bag that you fill with water and leave them in the sun to heat. When the sun has done it’s work and the water is warm, you use the built in shower nozzle to give yourself a shower. These types of camping showers are sold as camping and outdoor equipment but if you so desire they are perfectly ok to use in the home as well. Might help you save on the electricity bill if you do.

Solar camping showers have bags that are made from tough plastic and are clear on one side while being dark on the other. To use one of these you must first fill it up with water and hang or lay it out in the sun with the clear side facing up. After about 2 or 3 hours the sun should of heated up the water sufficiently enough for you to be able to take a warm shower. It the day is scorching the water maybe extremely hot so it’s always a good idea to test the temperature of the water before jumping under it.

When it comes to actually showering under one of these camping showers you must hang it up somewhere above head level and open the valve. The most common size of bag for a camping shower is 5 litres and this is usually adequate enough for one person to take a fairly long shower.

The disadvantage to the solar camping shower is that you rely solely upon the sun to heat the water. So if the day is cloudy you are unlikely to get warm water. If the temperature is 70 degrees outside and you hang the bag up outside and you should get a good source of warm water. However if the temperature is lower than 70 degrees it is better to lay the bag on the ground so that it is exposed to more of the sun to heat it.
